REORIENT - Business Case for Seamless Intermodal Freight Transport

The European rail freight transport is facing changes. By March 2004 the Third Railway Package has been published by the European Commission. Opportunities arising from liberalization of the rail market and more interoperable infrastructure can be profitably exploited within the intermodal freight corridor connecting the Nordic region with Central and Southeastern Europe. A remarkable growth in freight volumes shipped between Sweden/Norway/Finland and Central/Southeastern Europe can be stated. During the time period from 1999 - 2004 northbound and southbound freight volumes grew each by roughly 30 percent. For this, the REORIENT project has been launched with its primary focus to: (1) identify and develop business concepts for trans-European rail freight transport to increase competitiveness with road transport, and (2) assess the extent to which the EC’s interoperability legislation contributes to successful implementation of the business concepts. In order to explore the different aspects of corridor operations, market potential, and service supply, the REORIENT project will develop a business case.
